Volunteers gathered to lend a hand to our Petaluma Firefighters at Fire Station #2 by pulling weeds and sheet mulching. We can't wait to see the garden thrive!

Hello Daily Actor,

As the sun’s rays begin to feel warmer, and the buds on surrounding fruit trees start to take shape, the onset of Spring becomes undeniably clear.

Now is the perfect time to care for trees, since they, like us, are emerging from Winter’s period of rest and restoration. Before their leaves sprout towards the sun,  it’s important that we intentionally guide their growth. Perhaps the most important way to promote their health is by pruning.

View pruning as focused growth - if every limb is allowed to branch out, then each will receive less nutrients and energy. The weaker branches will inevitably break because they simply cannot hold the weight of the fruit they are expected to bear.

By providing them with the pruning they need, you’ll be protecting them from diseases, cultivating strong branches, and ensuring bountiful fruiting come summer.

“To encourage a pruning mindset, two insights that often come to mind are, you can do anything but you can’t do everything and too many priorities equal no priorities. What is crowding your garden and life and could use some pruning to keep your branches or body from breaking?”
-Trathen Heckman, Life Lessons from the Garden, 2012

By dreaming with care, connecting with our deepest intentions, and pruning what may not be essential now, we are enhancing our ability to embody the key areas of growth we hope to see in ourselves and in our gardens this year.

We invite you to learn more about pruning this month at our Fruit Tree Pruning Volunteer Day and Native Tree Care WorkshopBy beginning with healthy pruning in the garden, you’ll be better-equipped to bring a pruning mindset into all corners of your life!

With deep appreciation,
Emily Nodal
Climate Resilience Programs Coordinator
