Summer greetings Daily Actor,

During the summer, high temperatures and drought conditions can stress soil ecosystems, making it a great time to take action to nurture the soil in our gardens. Soil health is the cornerstone of a thriving ecosystem, playing a crucial role in carbon drawdown. By nurturing healthy soils, you can help slow down climate change in your own yard and garden!

Summer is the perfect time to transform your lawn into a beautiful water-wise landscape with sheet mulching, which decomposes your lawn in place. This results in soil enriched with nutrients, improved water retention, and weed suppression. With a few months and summer heat, sheet mulching now will allow your landscape to be ready for planting in the fall.

If you already have compost and mulch on your landscape, when was the last time you reapplied it? Applying a thick layer of compost and mulch protects soil from the sun while boosting soil organic matter and protecting it from erosion.

Whether you’re new to soil coverage or ready to reapply, Daily Acts is excited to uplift an amazing new resource from Zero Waste Sonoma: Compost Hubs! Compost hubs are permanent locations with certified organic compost free to residents and open year-round. So go get some free compost for your garden!

And while you're getting ready to do some carbon gardening this summer, make sure to check out our Carbon Gardening Video Series to learn more about improving soil health, from what to plant and how to irrigate properly.

Together, let’s nurture our soil to create climate resilient communities! 🌱🤎

With gratitude,
Ava Faithe Castro
